Fox in Socks by Dr Seuss : Sometimes You Need to Smile
This is the classic make you smile, laugh, and roll over in embarrassment Dr Seuss book. Unless of course you manage to master it - then you get to gloat and cheer and jump up and down in pride! Or, if you’re with the wrong group of kids - you get to read it again faster!
I am not a huge Dr Seuss fan, I have a few that I really love, but most of them I just tolerate. Fox in Socks I love and adore. I jump at the chance to read it to a group of kids who will appreciate it.
I most recently read it repeatedly to the same group of 4 year old boys at a Swiss day care. English was either their first or second language and they all loved the book. After I’d finished they would take it and carefully point out Fox and Socks and Knox and clocks and ticks and tocks etc. Sometimes they got it wrong, but it was obvious that they were learning to associate the words with the pictures, and after awhile could figure out which text word went with the verbal word - they were learning to read!
The other fun thing to do with the book is hand it to a teenager and tell them to read it as fast as possible. Good luck teens! Nothing like a group of “I’m so cool” teens tripping over their tongues as they try to read a kids book!
So if you have a 4 year old kid at home who wants to learn to read by listening to stories of lucky luke who licks lakes, or a group of teens who need to be challenged with the likes of susie sewing clothes onto joe crow’s nose then by all means haul out Fox in Socks and let the fun begin!
