Early Autumn by Robert B Parker : A Spenser Classic
Robert B Parker is the author of the Spenser novels. A series of books about a private detective who is large, in charge, and full of himself. I once set out to determine what makes a Spenser novel so amazing. I determined that each chapter had at least one if not all of the following: Spenser discussing how well dressed he was, Spenser discussing how good looking a woman was, Spenser believing said woman was in love/lust with him, Spenser describing a meal. Somehow despite these characteristics you learn to love Spenser and to know that you are in for a good relaxing read. Chances are a Spenser novel isn’t going to last you more than a couple of sittings, and its probably not going to help you grow as a person. On the other hand, its going to provide you with some great entertainment, some good consistent characters, and a mystery. All in all better than the junk on tv (or at least on par with CSI).
Early Autumn is my favourite of the Spenser novels. In this novel Spenser teaches a kid to be independent, to grow, to be autonomous, but its how he teaches him that makes the story. It is a novel to return too when you need a little faith in humanity, as well as a novel that provides excellent insight into two of the series main characters Spenser and Susan Silverman, his long time love interest.
This book is great as a stand alone novel, but for someone looking for an introduction to a new mystery author, or a teen looking to discover current adult mystery writers, this is a great place to start.
